Heritage Masonry Repair Adelaide
Describe what the mortar, render or paint on an old wall is doing and your enquiry goes to one local provider, who inspects the wall and quotes in writing. A joint heritage guide says not to use hard cement mortar to repoint failed lime mortar joints, because it will just drive the damp further up the wall.
Thanks — we have your enquiry. Someone will be in touch shortly. Prefer to talk now? Call (08) 8330 4909.
- Each enquiry goes to one independent provider for Adelaide, not to a list of firms that all ring you.
- We do not repair masonry. The provider inspects, then names the price.
- Every call opens with a notice that it may be recorded.

Before you get a quote
Four things to know first
- Match the mortar the 2008 joint heritage guide to salt attack and rising damp (Heritage Council of NSW, Heritage Victoria, the South Australian Department for Environment and Heritage and Adelaide City Council) says not to use hard cement mortar to repoint failed lime mortar joints, because it will just drive the damp further up the wall and may also damage the bricks.
- Be careful with render and paint The same sources say not to render masonry walls at the base with a strong impervious Portland cement mortar plinth, which only serves to trap moisture in the wall, and not to paint old masonry walls, which can trap the moisture and force it inside.
- Heritage places need a question first The State's guide to State Heritage Places lists conservation, repair and remedial works, including masonry and plaster and re-pointing, among the work that typically needs development approval, and says to contact your local council if you are unsure.
- Ask who is authorised South Australia's Building Work Contractors Act 1995 bars carrying on business as a building work contractor except as authorised under it. This site has read no page saying whether masonry repair is covered, so ask whoever quotes.
Three steps
From enquiry to quote
- Tell us about the wall What it is built of, what is happening to the mortar, render or paint, and whether the house is a heritage place.
- It is passed on Your enquiry goes to one independent local provider covering Adelaide. The provider pays for the introduction; you never do.
- A provider inspects and quotes The provider looks at the wall and prices the work in writing. The price is theirs to set.
Heritage Masonry Repair across Adelaide
Adelaide's heritage surveys describe masonry house by house. The survey of Kensington and Norwood describes the property on George Street, Norwood, as built of "selected coursed random-rubble bluestone, lined pointing and rendered quoins, frieze and brackets on the front wall.". The item is a description at survey time, not the wall today.
